7. Narrative Description:
This story-and-a-half brick gable front cottage has a rectangular plan (25.6x42.6) with a
centered east-facing three-sided bay and a rear recessed side porch. The plan contains 1,099 square
feet of living space on the main floor. There is a full basement. The front porch measures 6x25.6.
While the Assessor dates the house to 1925, it pre-dates 1909 (Sanborn Map) and is possibly
as early as c.1890 given that it has structural brick walls. The porch is c.191 0 given its classical round
columns. The house is a good example of this period of vernacular brickwork, particularly the use of
brick voissoir arches and the raised brick tracery which caps the upper front windows. Also of interest
is the presumed use of large brackets to infill the tops of the three-sided bay, these are now covered
with siding. The windows have likely been replaced.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This is an interesting brick cottage but the aluminum siding has covered up important detailing.
As a result the cottage is not recommended as being individually significant on architectural grounds.
Nicholas Wagner lived here as of 1921. He was a clerk at the Second National Bank as of 1890
and lived on Windsor Street as of 1886.
This cottage is present on the 1909 Sanborn Map as 440 Eagle Point Road. Both of the
present-day porches were present. No changes or outbuildings are indicated through 1962.
