7. Narrative Description:
This two story brick gable front residence is of an early date and is of interest because it
presents an early form of this local vernacular house type. The plan (24x35) is broader and squattier
with a lower pitched roof than is usually found in city examples. Windows are 2/2 lights which indicates
an earlier construction date. Window arches are of carved stone and are semi-elliptical if form with
reversed curves at each end where the lintel joins with the sidewall. The full-width front porch is a later
replacement using an unusual smooth faced round concrete block. The entry has a transom. Side
windows employ a semi-elliptical brick arch. The upper center opening is a door which exits to the
porch roof. This is very unusual in Dubuque and might represent an alteration. The attic light is smaller
given the lower roof profile but the stone lintel and sill, in reduced size, mirror those on the fayade
below. A rear frame addition measures 29x12. The original storm windows remain on the lower floor
windows.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This early sidehall plan vernacular gable front example is well preserved and is a contributing
property within a district. The building lacks the state of integrity and outstanding architectural qualities
necessary to be considered indivdually historically significant under Criterion C architecture.
The Assessor dates the house to 1880 and the building is present on the 1891 Sanborn Map.
The area was not mapped for the 1884 Sanborn Map.
