7. Narrative Description:
This corner two story brick commercial storefront occupies the northeast corner of Prince Street
and East 22nd Street. The rectangular plan (24.6x54, 24.6x16 rear addition) has a stone foundation.
Like most corner storefronts in the survey area this one is distinctive in several ways. First and
foremost is the use of an octagonal turret with an onion dome top and finial. Second is the linear nature
of the fayade design, created by the use of unusual smooth heavy stone lintels which are set flush with
the wall plane. Two paired window sets heighten this horizontal sense. The entire parapet line is
covered with a projecting metal cornice. Usually just the storefront is so treated, with a simpler brick
parapet wall along the side wall. Later storefronts tend to use smaller side wall windows, set high in the
wall as does this example. Finally, this building sports a carrara glass replacement storefront, which is
sympathetic to the original design.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This is one of the more distinctive corner storefronts in the survey area. Its octagonal turret with
its unique onion dome underscores the association of exotic dome and finial architectural elements with
the local German vernacular. Certainly a contributing building within a district, this building appears to
warrant individual historical significance under Criterion C architecture. Further research is necessary
to tie down the construction date, its builder and its history.
A two-story frame saloon stood on this site as of 1891. Smitty's Tap was a recent tenant.
There is one apartment upstairs.
