ITEM TITLE: Veterans Day(November 11, 2018) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Veterans Day Proclamation Supporting Documentation THE CITY OF UB E Masterpiece on the Mississippi WHEREAS, every year, Veterans Day is a time to reflect on the service and sacrifice of all generations of veterans; these men and women have given selflessly of themselves to defend our freedoms, and we are constantly humbled by their strength and courage; and WHEREAS, the history of Veterans Day goes back to the Armistice, known as the Treaty of Versailles, that ended hostilities in World War I, with the fighting ceased months earlier with a temporary cessation between the Allies and German, that went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month; and WHEREAS, in 1938, the 11 t" of November was dedicated as Armistice Day to honor the veterans of that conflict, and in 1954 was expanded to honor American veterans of all wars; and WHEREAS, on Veterans Day, we pay tribute to our veterans, to the fallen, and to their families; to honor their contributions to our nation, as we keep the promises made to all who have answered our country's call; as we fulfill our obligations to the nation, we keep faith with the patriots who have risked their lives to preserve our Union, and with the ideals of service and sacrifice upon which our Republic was founded; and WHEREAS, The Dubuque American Legion Post #6 proudly honors all Tristate Veterans, veteran organizations, and military units. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. O'BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY ASK ALL CITIZENS TO MAKE VETERANS DAY 2018 AN HONOR FOR ALL WHO HAVE SERVED OUR NATION REGARDLESS OF WHICH WAR OR CONFLICT, INCLUDING OUR NEWEST GENERAL OF VETERANS WHO HAVE AND ARE SERVING IN THE POST 9/11 ERA. LET US SAY "THANK-YOU" FOR THE SACRIFICES AND ALL THEY HAVE GIVEN WHILE SERVING OUR COUNTRY; AS WE PROCLAIM THE 11 T" OF NOVEMBER 2018, AS "V E T E RA N S D AY" I N WITN ESS TH EREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to be affixed this 5th day of November 2018.
