ITEM TITLE: Pancreatic Cancer Day(November 15, 2018) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Pancreatic Cancer Day Proclamation Supporting Documentation THE CITY OF UB E Masterpiece on the Mississippi WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer has become one of our time's most devastating diseases surpassing breast cancer to become the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and is projected to become the second leading cause by the year 2020; and WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the 7t" most-common cause of cancer-related death in men and women across the world; and WHEREAS, in 2018, an estimated 55,400 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States with nearly 44,330 succumbing to the disease; and WHEREAS, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is generally in later stages, and only 10% of pancreatic cancer patients are diagnosed when the disease is confined to their pancreas and 91% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years of diagnosis; and WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a five-year relative survival rate in the single digits at just 9%; and WHEREAS, it is projected that approximately 580 lowans will be diagnosed, and 430 deaths will occur in lowa in 2018 with an estimated 418,000 new pancreatic cancer cases diagnosed worldwide in 2020; and WHEREAS, the long-term health and well-being of the residents of Dubuque are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and ongoing research into early detection, causes, and effective, comprehensive treatments. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 15T" DAY OF NOVEMBER 2018 AS: "PAN C REAT I C CAN C E R DAY" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
