Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT: Temporary Seasonal Interns — Project Management & Water Resources DATE: May 15, 2019 City Engineer Gus Psihoyos requests City Council authorization to hire two additional temporary seasonal interns for the summer of 2019 (May through August) to assist Project Manager Steve Sampson Brown and Civil Engineer Deron Muehring with several active projects. To hire a consultant to do the same work on these projects would cost in the range of$80 to $120 per hour, where a seasonal intern would make $14.91 per hour. Van Milligen, City Mana f=jl �� . . �,/ )(,:� _� FROM: Gus Psihoyos, City Engineer <<��_ , � . �:_��, SUBJECT: Temporary Seasonal Interns - Project Management & Water Resources DATE: May 13, 2019 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memo is to seek authorization to hire two additional temporary seasonal interns for the summer of 2019 (May through August) to assist the Project Manager, Steve Sampson Brown and Civil Engineer Deron Muehring with several active projects. DISCUSSION This seasonal interns will assist the Engineering Department and Steve and Deron with the engineering design and construction administrative activities associated with the following projects: Federal Building Roof Restoration, Blum Site Building Deconstruction, Schmitt Island Veterans Memorial, Cedar- Terminal Lift Stations and Force Main Assessment, Bee Branch Railroad Crossing, 22nd & 17t" Street Reconstruction and the Flexsteel Jackson Street Building Deconstruction. To hire a consultant to do the same work on these projects would cost in the range of between $80-$120 per hour. Thus hiring a seasonal intern is more cost effective. The Engineering Department has finished conducting interviews for this year and is in the process of filling our four authorized, budgeted seasonal intern positions that are approved as part of our annual operating budget. Our department still has a need for additional seasonal intern help to assist with the large project workload this summer. We �re rec�u�sting authorization of two ac�ditional 0.�5 FTE., NA-34 �ngineering Assistant Seasonal/Step E Positions ($14.91/hr.) in order to meet our project workload. These positions will be funded by 100% recharge to capital projects. RECOMMENDATION I recommend authorizing two additional seasonal intern 0.25 FTE, NA-34 Engineering Assistant Seasonal/Step E positions ($14.91/hr.) for the project management and water resources positions.
