INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memo is to seek authorization to hire two additional temporary
seasonal interns for the summer of 2019 (May through August) to assist the Project
Manager, Steve Sampson Brown and Civil Engineer Deron Muehring with several active
projects.
DISCUSSION
This seasonal interns will assist the Engineering Department and Steve and Deron with
the engineering design and construction administrative activities associated with the
following projects: Federal Building Roof Restoration, Blum Site Building
Deconstruction, Schmitt Island Veterans Memorial, Cedar- Terminal Lift Stations and
Force Main Assessment, Bee Branch Railroad Crossing, 22nd & 17t" Street
Reconstruction and the Flexsteel Jackson Street Building Deconstruction. To hire a
consultant to do the same work on these projects would cost in the range of between
$80-$120 per hour. Thus hiring a seasonal intern is more cost effective.
The Engineering Department has finished conducting interviews for this year and is in
the process of filling our four authorized, budgeted seasonal intern positions that are
approved as part of our annual operating budget. Our department still has a need for
additional seasonal intern help to assist with the large project workload this summer.
We re recusting authorization of two acditional 0.5 FTE., NA-34 ngineering
Assistant Seasonal/Step E Positions ($14.91/hr.) in order to meet our project workload.
These positions will be funded by 100% recharge to capital projects.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend authorizing two additional seasonal intern 0.25 FTE, NA-34 Engineering
Assistant Seasonal/Step E positions ($14.91/hr.) for the project management and water
resources positions.
