Describe your As a staff member of the Dubuque County Historical Society(DCHS)
experience working dba: The National Mississippi River Museum &Aquarium and The
in diverse Mathias Ham Historic Site, I work with 240 active volunteers and a
e11V11'011mentS: diverse staff of 143 co-workers from all over the United States. Unique
to the DCHS museums are the living (animals)and historic
collections. These collections require varied and highy disciplined
areas of expertise; therefore, I work with scientists, botanists,
conservations, academic scholars, archivists, curators, collections
registrars, and water/facilities/building maintenance/IT professionals
all who care for the critical infrastructure that ensure the safety of
these collections. This diverse and varied group each possesses their
niche culture of literacy in which to be effective and successful. As a
culturally sensitive, woke, and life-long learning individual, I've actively
engaged in developing the skill set necessary to become a successful
learner, listener, and leader. This includes the self-awareness that I
want to learn and explore intercultural experiences, educate myself on
intercultural communication, have explored my own cultural and
personal biases, and have abandoned ethnocentric beliefs. The work
is never done. I continue to ask questions, exchange stories, and seek
connections beyond my own experience to perform as a more
knowledgeable and engaged human. In recent experience, I co-
founded an DEAI Working Group at the River Museum. Driven by a
diverse group of personnel, across varied disciplines, our mission is to
intentionally foster institutional growth to integrate diversity, equity,
accessibility, and inclusion into DCHS's practices, procedures, and
programs. We aim to do this by encouraging the expansion of a
diverse board, staff, and volunteers; pursuing inclusivity and cultural
competency through substantive learning and transparent policies;
and modeling best practices. DEAI strategies aim to be implemented
across departments, embedded in programs and exhibits, consistent
in our human resources practices, and at the forefront of the visitor
experience. Equally, DCHS is accredited
As an arts administrator, I worked with and represented visual artists
from all the U.S. and more than a dozen foreign countries and worked
with filmmakers and musicians from all over the world. Navigating
cultural representation of art, music, and film requires attention to
sensitive and aware marketing and communication while encouraging
the communities we were serving with accessible ways to engage with
broad and diverse cultural experiences. There is little room for
neutrality in the arts and culture sector—the root of it IS the
examination of CULTURE (all cultures).
Equally, I have a degree in education. We have failed as educators in
we refuse to teach from varied lenses. A job that altered my future as
a leader was one summer when I held a short-term position as
Operations Director with a for-profit education organization. This
intensive summer academic program engaged youth from all over the
world in interactive and crosscutting curriculum to prepare them for
college, career, and life in the global 21st century. In this role
(essentially as the "school principal"), I led a team of 12 individuals
from all over the country, whom I'd never met before, and governed
--5,000 students from all over the world, over the course of three
months, 24 hours a day. WhaYs more, we changed cities every 10
days, set up a new program, and welcomed a new group of students,
met their parents, and learned to navigate a new campus in a new
metro area. My background in education had readied me to be a
reflective decision-maker, equipped me with pedagogy, and a
philosophy to teach outside of my own lens. However, truth be told,
theory-to-practice is a very different world. In each city we landed, our
Team was met with diverse languages, cultures, customs, and
learning styles that directly affected every facet of our school day. The
diversity of the students' (and team members) individual approaches
to academics, socializing, dining, hygiene, and discipline varied. We
lived, worked, and learned together in a highly intimate and rigorous
environment. We quickly discovered that to embrace and learn from
everyone we met and to honor their unique contribution to the
classroom and the program was the path of least resistance and the
path to immense personal growth.
Describe your Participating, as a community member, in Dubuque's Envision 2010
experience engaging initiative proved to be instrumental in forming my personal philosophy
other community of engagement. Community meetings, envisioning sessions,
members to gather committee work, volunteer empowerment, and community
their input and conversations were new to me when I moved to Dubuque. The
opinions:
envisioning process was eye opening and I grew to understand the
value of community input in placemaking. As Director of Gallery C &
Studio Works, we developed a community mural project. In order to
inform the artisYs work, we engaged various groups of all ages from
the neighborhood to gain insight into"what the neighborhood
represented to them" in hopes that the mural would reflect the
neighborhood values. When I lived in the Washington Neighborhood, I
was active in the Neighborhood Association. We met monthly to
develop a shared mission and action plans to initiate community-
building activities to positively impact our neighborhood. At the River
Museum, we understand the value of our community partners. We
work in partnership with conservationists, preservationists, educators,
workforce developers, historians, scientists, and students in our
community to inform and to beta-test our work. We use focus groups
to inform the content of exhibits and programs. I have served on
various committees and boards on a local level, with artists, farmers,
students, stakeholders, wellness gurus, scholars and people of all
ages. I believe that community engagement must be at the center of
the work in order to be effective.

69.16A Gender balance.
1. All appointive boards, commissions, committees, and councils of the state
established by the Code, if not otherwise provided by law, shall be gender balanced.
No person shall be appointed or reappointed to any board, commission, committee, or
council established by the Code if that appointment or reappointment would cause the
number of inembers of the board, commission, committee, or council of one gender to
be greater than one—half the membership of the board, commission, committee, or
council plus one if the board, commission, committee, or council is composed of an odd
number of inembers. If the board, commission, committee, or council is composed of
an even number of inembers, not more than one—half of the membership shall be of one
gender. If there are multiple appointing authorities for a board, commission, committee,
or council, they shall consult each other to avoid a violation of this section.
2. All appointive boards, commissions, committees, and councils of a political
subdivision of the state that are established by the Code, if not otherwise provided by
law, shall be gender balanced as provided by subsection 1 unless the political
subdivision has made a good faith effort to appoint a qualified person to fill a vacancy
on a board, commission, committee, or council in compliance with subsection 1 for a
period of three months but has been unable to make a compliant appointment. In
complying with the requirements of this subsection, political subdivisions shall utilize a
fair and unbiased method of selecting the best qualified applicants. This subsection
shall not prohibit an individual whose term expires prior to January 1, 2012, from being
reappointed even though the reappointment continues an inequity in gender balance.
