WHEREAS, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, Dubuque's Asian and Pacific Islanders communities are a contributing part to making
our City a vibrant community of cultures; and
WHEREAS, we have seen a staggering rise in bullying, discrimination, and hate crimes against the
Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community during the COVID-19 pandemic;
and
WHEREAS, in the AAPI community, this problem is often compounded by cultural, religious, and
linguistic barriers that can keep these youth from seeking and receiving help; and
WHEREAS, we join Act To Change, a national nonprofit dedicated to fighting bullying in the AAPI
community, in sharing one vision - a world where all youth, including within the AAPI
community, have the opportunity to grow up feeling proud and supported in the
development of their identities and sharing of their stories.
NOW THEREFORE, I, DAVID T. RESNICK, MAYOR PRO TEM OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO
HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 18t" OF MAY 2022 AS
"AAPI Day Against Bullying and Hate"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO FOSTER DIALOGUE,
SHARE RESOURCES, AND LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO TO FIGHT BULLYING.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Dubuque to be affixed this 16th day of May, 2022.
