Intercultural Competency
In March of 2009, the Training and Workforce Development Coordinator was hired. The
Training and Workforce Development Coordinator is involved in implementing the
components of the Intercultural Competency Strategic Plan which includes reviewing
and modifying the City's recruitment efforts in order to attract a larger number of women
and people of color-to apply for City positions and in developing training programs for
City employees that focus on increasing our ability to interact with the public and co-
workers as our community workforce continues to change.
Over the last several years, we formed committees to assist in the recruitment of new
firefighters and police officers. The purpose of the committees is to assist in increasing
the number of women and people of color to apply for these positions. The committee
members represent organizations such as the NAACP, Iowa Works, Loras College,
Iowa Commission on the Status of African Americans, Immigration Outreach, Women's
Center at the University of Platteville, Dubuque Community Advisory Panel, Greater
Dubuque Development Corporation, Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce, University
of Dubuque, Northeast Iowa Community College, Community Foundation of Greater
Dubuque, Dubuque Human Rights Commission, Multicultural Family Center as well as
representatives of the respective collective bargaining units and City.employees who
have a role in recruitment.
Volunteer Activities
Personnel Office employees serve on the Prescott School Partnership Committee,
coach Pop Warner Football and provide volunteer services to United Way, Crescent
Community Health Center and Maria House.
