Dubuque Receives Special Achievement
in GIS Award
July 18, 2022
The City of Dubuque was recently recognized for its use of geographic information
systems (GIS)with a Special Achievement Award in GIS from Esri, the international leader
in mapping and spatial data analytics technology. The award was presented to City of
Dubuque GIS Coordinator/Analyst Nikki Rosemeyer at the annual Esri International User
Conference last week in San Diego.
The Special Achievement in GIS Award acknowledges organizations that are using GIS to
solve some of the world's toughest challenges. The City of Dubuque is receiving the
award for its work combining community input, federal and state data, and its own
geographic data to support broadband expansion and internet connectivity in the city.
Dubuque was selected from over 350,000 Esri product users from around the world in the
commercial, defense, transportation, nonprofit, telecommunications, and government
sectors. Esri staff submitted nominations, with Jack Dangermond, president and founder
of Esri, personally selecting award recipients who displayed excellence in using the
technology.
The is the third time the City of Dubuque has received the Special Achievement Award in
GIS since starting to use the technology in 1996, with the two most recent awards being
received under Rosemeyer's direction. The City utilizes GIS technology for all data with a
geographic component, from hydrants and manholes, to broadband availability and flood
prediction in the Bee Branch drainage basin.

"Our goal is to provide a solid asset management system that can be used to manage
day-to-day work, but also provide data for solutions to our community's needs," said
Rosemeyer. She said the award acknowledges the contributions made by over 300 GIS
users within the City organization in making data-driven decisions.
