Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Jenni Petersen-Brant, Arts & Cultural Affairs Coordinator SUBJECT: Transmission of Invitation to Art on the River Opening Celebration DATE: July 27, 2022 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to transit to City leadership an invitation to the opening celebration of the 2022-23 Art on the River exhibition, an event set for Friday, August 5, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. on the Grand River Center patio and along the Mississippi Riverwalk in the Port of Dubuque. BACKGROUND & DISCUSSION The 2022-23 Art on the River (AOTR) exhibition will be the City's 16t" edition of this popular rotating public sculpture program along the Mississippi Riverwalk in the Port of Dubuque. The new collection of 11 sculptural works is set to be installed the first week of August 2022. This process culminates with an opening celebration that is free and open to the public. In addition to welcoming the Art on the River artists and artworks to the riverwalk, the celebration will feature live music by local artist Brion Bowman, spoken word performance by local poet Aaliyah Herrion, and 3D artmaking demonstrations by: • Dan Aldeman, local metalwork artist with a work included in the 2022-23 Art on the River exhibit; • Emerald Frommelt, local beadwork and Indigenous craft artist; • Elizabeth Jack, local Marshallese traditional weaver; • Rachel Spurling, local potter and Clarke University alum. Additional information on this event is available at www.cityofdubuque.org/artontheriver. As one of our many outreach tactics, the City's Public Information Office designed an invitation that could also serve as a utility bill insert. The invitation will reach approximately 21,000 City of Dubuque utility customers with their July billing. Additional copies of the insert were received by the Arts & Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission to personally distribute to their networks. RECOMMENDATION/ACTION STEP I respectfully request that the information provided by received and filed, with an invitation to our elected officials and City staff, along with their family and friends to join in this community celebration.
