Masterpiece on the Mississippi
PITDIMCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on Valentine's Day of 1932 the Rev. Willian Masters, Pastor of First Baptist Church and
Edward Beach of First Congregational Church and the caring people of Dubuque began
serving soup to the men of the Great Depression; and
WHEREAS, in the first week of opening its doors the Dubuque Rescue Mission served 310 meals and
provided shelter for 60 men; and
WHEREAS, since that time, the Mission has continued to serve those most in need with daily meals,
providing shelter to 52 homeless men, most in a dormitory setting, others in transitional
homes or apartments; and
WHEREAS, the Mission operates two Thrift Stores providing clothing, furniture, and houseware items,
free to those most in need, or for a moderate price which has provided supplement income
in difficult times; and
WHEREAS, through recent donations from generous benefactors the Mission was able to purchase
property on White Street for a Warming/Drop-In center for clients seeking refuge from the
cold, a place to rest, a shower, a restroom or a friendly smile; and
WHEREAS, the Dubuque Rescue Mission is made possible through the faith -filled support of
volunteers, benefactors, and the entire community of Dubuque and the surrounding area.
NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGE AND CELEBRATE THE DUBUQUE RESCUE MISSION'S 90
YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE POOR AND MARGINALIZED IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to
be affixed this 3rd day of October 2022.
