WHEREAS, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month is recognized each November to bring
understanding and awareness to the disease and the individuals and families affected by
it; and
WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer has become one of the most devastating diseases, surpassing breast
cancer to become the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and
projected to become the second leading cause of cancer deaths by the year 2030; and
WHEREAS, in 2022 over 62,210 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States
and 49,830 will die from the disease; and
WHEREAS, it is projected that in 2022 approximately 580 Iowans will be diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer and 470 deaths will occur; and
WHEREAS, currently there is no cure for pancreatic cancer and there have been no significant
improvements in survival rates in the last 46 years; and
WHEREAS, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is generally in later stages;
and 89% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years of diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a five-year relative survival rate at just
11 %; and it is the 7th most common cause of cancer -related death in men and women
across the world; and
Whereas, the long-term health and well-being of the residents of Dubuque are enhanced as a direct
result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and ongoing research into early
detection, effective, comprehensive treatments and a cure; and
Whereas, The Michael W. Oglesby Foundation is committed to raising funds and public awareness
for Funding the Cure for Pancreatic Cancer Research
NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE 17TH OF NOVEMBER 2022 AS
"Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to
be affixed this 7th day of November 2022.
