Commissioners Excused: Alec Gustafson. Commissioners Unexcused: John McAndrews. Staff Members Present: Wally Wernimont and Chris Happ Olson. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Daykin Cassill at 5:3 3 p.m. MINUTES: Motion by Dement, seconded by Esser, to approve the minutes of the December 15, 2022 meeting as submitted. Motion carried by the following vote: Aye — Dement, Doyle, Esser, Gau, Monk, Stuter and Daykin Cassill; Nay — none. ITEMS FROM PUBLIC: none. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: Commissioner Monk noted that the 2023 Preserve Iowa Summit is planned for June 1-3 in Sioux City. Staff informed the Commission that attending the conference is supported by City funding for training, as it helps the HPC meet goals and requirements for Certified Local Government status. Staff encouraged the Commission to consider attendance and stated they would bring more information to the Commission as it is made available. ITEMS FROM STAFF: Certified Local Grant program update: Staff member Happ Olson updated the Commission that she is currently working on the annual report for the Commission as a member of the Certified Local Grant program, and that it includes sending an updated 2023 HPC workplan to the State Historic Preservation Office. She also mentioned that the City is awaiting official notice for the status of two grant requests made to the CLG Grant program, and expects the announcement soon. No action was requested on the part of the Commission. Minutes — Historic Preservation Commission January 19, 2023 Page 2 2023 Draft Historic Preservation Commission Workplan: Staff member Happ Olson discussed the enclosed 2023 HPC draft workplan, showing two categories of projects on respective pages. She noted that the new color coding differentiates in process projects from future projects. She noted that the GIS story map for the Black Heritage Survey was taken on by staff and therefore is in process. Further discussion of the workplan ensued. Motion by Monk, seconded by Esser, to send a recommendation approval of the workplan with the modifications discussed. Motion carried by the following vote: Aye — Dement, Doyle, Esser, Gau, Monk, Stuter and Daykin Cassill; Nay — none. 2023 Ken Kringle Awards: The Commission discussed the nominations that were put forth in the provided memo for the Ken Kringle Awards for 2023. There were discussions of each project and their respective eligibility and appropriateness. Other discussion ensued of other properties which may be eligible, and none were formally identified.
