SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Proclamation Supporting Documentation 'fHE CI'fY pF Du8 E Masferprece on the Misszssrpyz WHEREAS, for nearly 34 years, every Congress has authorized, and each President of the United States has declared a period each year for the celebration of the Jewish culture, history, and contributions to the United States. Beginning in 2006, Congress passed a bipartisan resolution calling on state and local governments and the people of the United States to observe a full month in which American Jewish History is celebrated; and WHEREAS, Temple Beth EI, established in 1875, and its members of the Jewish Faith, endorse the tradition of May as Jewish American Heritage Month in Dubuque; and WHEREAS, there has been an active, though quiet, Jewish presence almost since Dubuque's founding. Look no further than Linwood Cemetery, former Main Street Merchants, Educators, Professionals in the Arts & Medicine, and Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs, to see the Jewish tradition is to give to their communities; and WHEREAS, local recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month matters now more than ever. Antisemitism has been rising at an alarming rate in our country, and many of our cities have experienced an increase in antisemitic incidents. The resurgence of this ancient hatred is a threat not only to Jewish people but to all of us; and WHEREAS, by bringing Jewish American Heritage Month to Dubuque, we offer hope and optimism through the celebration of the vibrant heritage of the Jewish Americans who have enriched our lives; and WHEREAS, we stand against all forms of hate and bigotry and are united in our commitment to dignity, compassion, and justice for all residents of Dubuque. NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF MAY 2023 AS "JEWISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND URGE RESIDENTS TO CELEBRATE AND HONOR THIS OCCASION. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to be affixed this 1 St day of May 2023. Brad M. Cavanagh, Mayor Attest: Trish L. Gleason, MMC, Assistant City Clerk 2023: Submitted and accepted by Susan Farber.
