INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide a brief background on the food
distribution partnership between the Leisure Services Department and the Boys & Girls
Club of Greater Dubuque.
BACKGROUND
For well over 10 years, the Leisure Services Department has partnered with the Boys &
Girls Club of Greater Dubuque to provide meals for the participants of our summer
playground programs. It is important to also note that this program is funded through
the United Way. Over the years, staff from both organizations have worked together to
alter programming and maximize food distribution opportunities throughout the summer,
and in some cases year-round. Just within the last 10 summers, the total numbers of
meals served during the playground program has grown from 2,100 in 2013 to 8,647
served in 2022. Another example of this collaboration was during the pandemic, when
staff worked with the Boys & Girls Club to offer additional dinner distribution sites out of
our parks serving over 7,600 dinners in 2020.
DISCUSSION
The Boys and Girls Club provides an invaluable service to this community. Their
partnership with our department, as well as several other organizations throughout
Dubuque, helps to greatly lessen the burden on families during the summer months,
and to provide the basic need of food for those families we serve. This year's food
program, as laid out through the latest summer food flyer, is yet another example of how
the Boys and Girls Club through collective impact with community partners can continue
to increase the opportunities for our community to have access to meals.
