Callahan, Frith, Leist, McLaughlin, Plamondon, Stro- bel, Wallis. On motion of Aid. Frith the coun- cil proceedings for the month of June, 1917, were approved as printed. BIDS. Bid for the filling of trenches in Streets and alleys and paving of same. Bid of Win. Manager Hathaway of the tele- phone company addressed the coun- cil relative to the excavating - under the sidewalk on Julien avenue be- tween Alpine street and Mt. Pleas- ant avenue. Dr. Slattery addressed the council protesting against allow- ing the_ telephone company to exca- vate under the sidewalk in front of Regular Session, August 2, 1917. 289 his property. On motion of Ald. Frith the matter of allowing the tele- phone company to excavate under the sidewalk on Julien avenue between Alpine street and Mt. Pleasant ave- nue was referred to the committee of the whole to view the grounds at 11:00 a. m. tomorrow morning, Aug- ust 3rd, and the representative of the telephone company and Or. Slattery notified to be present. Petition of E. J. Vogenthaler, rela- tive to ordering the contractor to re- pair the improvement of Windsor avenue or else to allow the property owners a reasonable reduction on their assessment, presented and read. Certificate of library tax levy, fixing the rate of library tax at 1 -2 mills on the dollar of the taxable valuation of the city; presented and read. On motion of Ald. Petition of the Dubuque Park Board, accompanied by resolution, placing the levy for park purposes in the city of Dubuque at 3 -4 mills on the dollar of the assessable property of the city, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Frith the petition and resolution were referred to the com- mittee of the whole. City Recorder Shea presented and read the notice, certified to by the publishers, of the city council's in- tention to improve Cora street from the south property line of the alley between Dodge street and Curtis street to the east property line of Grandview avenue and it is hereby proposed to make said street twenty - four feet between curbs. On motion of Ald. Plamondon the notice was re- ceived and filed. Callahan moved to suspend the rules for the purpose of allowing anyone present in the council cham- ber to address the council. Carried by the following vote: Yeas —Aids. Reilly, et al, addressed the council relative to the condition of the gutters on the improvements of •Ungs and Pfohl streets. On motion of Ald. Wallis the city engineer was instructed to have gutters and street on the improvements of Ungs and Pfohl streets repaired. Petition of C. T. Bush, asking the city council to cancel the sidewalk assessment against east 1 -2 of lot 30, Mt. Pleasant Addition, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Wallis the petition was referred to the city at- torney to report back to the city council. Petition of G. L. Korman, et al, asking the city council to improve Rosaline avenue from Leibnitz street to Klingenberg Terrace, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Frith the petition was referred to the street committee. Petition of A. R. Waite, asking the city council for permission to install a gasoline tank under the sidewalk on 11th and Clay streets, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Leist the prayer of the petitioner was granted, he to sign the waiver and agreement drawn up by the city attorney. Petition of George Schneider, et al, asking the city council to examine the condition of the street on Klingen- berg Terrace from Klein street to Rosaline street, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Frith the petition was referred to the street committee. Petition of Mrs. Maud Hogan, ask- ing the city council to cancel her taxes for the year 1916, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Pla- mondon the petition was referred to the committee of the whole to view the grounds. Petition of Mrs. M. Zogg, et al, pro- testing against the improving of Jan- sen avenue, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Frith the petition was referred to the committee of the whole. Communication of Mrs. E. M. Pot- ter, relative to injuries sustained by falling on an icy street on February 27, 1917, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Leist the communica- tion was referred to the committee of the whole and Mrs. Potter notified to be present. Petition of Miss Rose Kearney, ask- ing the city council to reduce her taxes to twenty dollars, the same as the past two years, presented and read. On motion of Ald. Plamondon the prayer of the petitioner was grant- ed and the city treasurer instructed accordingly.
