Honorable Mayor Terry Duggan
Dubuque City Council Members: Dubuque, Iowa
Re: Request for Public Hearing Eagle Point Bluff
Dear Mayor and Council Members:
At a time when Dubuque is investing in a multi-million dollar river-front development
program, I am surprised to learn that the city would approve zoning changes which would
incur onto one of Dubuque's most beautiful and irreplaceable natural resources and tourist
attractions; Eagle Point Park.
As a native of Dubuque, it is a fact that disturbs me enough to write a letter from abroad,
where I still retain my legal status as a registered voter in Dubuque County.
As a historic "Masterpiece on the Mississippi", Dubuque's natural enviroment and history
are two of its most attractive and unique features, features which will encourage the city's
continued growth and development. Unfortunately, historic and natural sites are things
that can never be replaced once destroyed, and Eagle Point Park is a site which falls into
both of those categories.
As attractive as tax revenue from condominium development might be, I am disappointed
to learn that Dubuque's most valuable and irreplaceable public resources might be so
eas~y bought and sold. I am further dismayed at the lack of public transparency in the
Council's hanrlling of this matter.
To this end, I would like to voice my solidarity with the z,4oo other signatures gathered in
opposition to the zoning change allowing key areas of Eagle Point Park to be demolished in
favor of Condominim development. I stand firmly against what I see as short-
sightedness on the part of the Council in behalf of the City's future.
Sincerely,
Laurel Sprengelmeyer
