The Five Flags Commission meeting convened at 9:00 a.m. in the Manager's office at Five Flags Center.
Chairperson Mike Brannon presided.
Minutes of April 16, 2001 meeting were approved.
There were no additions or deletions to the agenda.
Bob Nelsen explained that Klauer Construction Company is the main contractor on the Theater project and
construction started on schedule. So far all the seats have been removed from the main floor, box seat and
balcony levels. He bdefly explained other projects in detail also in progress in the theater. The Commission
members asked Bob questions and Bob answered all questions to their satisfaction. Mike Brannon
suggested that we have an open house when the renovation is completed to encourage people to come and
see the theater. Gil Spence agreed with Mike and said he would watch the progress of the construction and
decide on a date closer to the completion of the construction. The Commission members suggested that
they have a walk through of the theater after the next month's commission meeting when Proper safety hard
hats would be available. Jamie Blum and Gil Spence agreed to schedule that in the next month's agenda.
Gil Spence explained to the Commission members that he and Jamie have a meeting with the Dubuque
Thunderbirds on Wednesday evening to discuss the contract. Gil said that originally the Thunderbirds had
two issues to resolve, but looking at the proposed contract it seems like they have many issues to discuss.
The Commission members expressed their feelings and concems regarding the new contract and Gil made
note of their suggestions. He will keep them informed of the meeting details and any further negotiations.
Dudng information shadng Jamie announced that Paula Wolfe has accepted the position of Civic Center
Manager and will begin part-time on Tuesday, May 29% She will start full,time on August 1~ and will be
absent the week of the fair. Rod Bakke complimented Gil on his hard work dudng the search and
interviewing process for the candidate for this position.
Also dudng information sharing Jamie said the Dubuque Thunderbirds will be moving into the old Saints
office on June 4th. The Center just hosted the first School Odyssey on Saturday and that was a big success.
They are looking to continue this event on a yearly basis. High School graduations are coming up this
weekend with Galtagher following on June 30th. Gary Dolphin commented that he received a lot of commen,.ts
on how great the building looked during the SChool Odyssey. He also heard a lot of exposure on the raolo
about the building too.
Cindy Fuller asked if anyone had received any information regarding the missing trophies from the trophy
case. Mike Brannon said that he called Dadn Harmon and Dadn did not recall any negotiations being made
regarding the trophies. He thought the trophies should belong to the city but did not know what he could do
about the situation. Gil Spence stated that he had talked with Ted Scheft about the matter and Ted was
going to look into it and get back to GiL As of date, Gil has not heard back from Ted. Gil was going to check
and see if he had sent a letter to Brian Gallagher regarding this matter and if one was not sent, he would do
SO.
There being no further business, the meeting adjoumed at 9:35 a.m.
