Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Anderson Sainci, Director, Office of Shared Prosperity and Neighborhood Support SUBJECT: Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates (iJAG) City Life Student Presentation to City Council DATE: January 17, 2024 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memo is to request a work session for students enrolled in the Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates (iJAG) program at Stephen Hempstead and Dubuque Senior High School. The goal is to have these students present to the Mayor and City Council about their experience participating in City Life. DICUSSION City Life is a free program offered by the City of Dubuque Office of Shared Prosperity and Neighborhood Support (OSPNS) to connect and engage citizens to their local government. Semi-annually, once in the fall and once in the spring, up to twenty-five (25) residents share experiences with other residents, visit City facilities and learn about the various services departments provide. One outcome from City Life is to increase residents' engagement in the city governance process. From this program, the hope is that residents would feel empowered to join an open city board and/or commission to help make Dubuque an equitable community of choice. In addition to offering the program twice a year for adults, the OSPNS collaborates with the Dubuque public high schools iJAG program during the spring. The partnership has existed with the intention to extend City Life to area youth. For the past few years, we have engaged up to fifty (50) students per program. This year, the focal theme for iJAG is "Service", reflecting a commitment to fostering a sense of civic responsibility among participating students. Students will engage and participate in service projects with each department throughout the program. This experience will be valuable for the students as they prepare to present what they have learned from City Life at their statewide conference and, if selected, at the national conference. ACTION REQUIRED I am respectfully requesting a work session for students from Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates (iJAG) program to present to the Mayor and City Council about their experience participating in City Life on May 6, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. Cc. Adrienne Breitfelder, City Clerk Temwa Phiri Community Engagement Coordinator
