SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Proclamation Type Supporting Documentation '1"II II cl rY Or DU_ E Masterpiece on the Mississippi WHEREAS, walking, biking, and rolling to school are forms of active transportation that have numerous benefits, including: • Physical health and mental well-being • Improving student learning outcomes • Reducing traffic congestion • Increasing community connection • Improving air quality and lowering emissions; and WHEREAS, results from the National Household Travel Survey show that in 1969, 48% of students in grades K-8 walked or bicycled to school, but by 2017, that figure had fallen to 11 %; and WHEREAS, to ensure that students walking, biking, and rolling to school have a safe journey, the City of Dubuque is partnering with the Dubuque Community School District, Holy Family Catholic Schools, the Safe Routes to School manager from the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, and others to make walking and biking to school even safer and easier; and WHEREAS, Dubuque has sidewalks throughout the city, and schools have crossing guards ready to guide students safely onto school grounds; and WHEREAS, students of all grades are encouraged to walk, bike, or roll to school on this special, nationally celebrated day. NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 8TH OF MAY 2024 AS "WALK, BIKE, AND ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
