WHEREAS, for 43 years, every President of the United States has declared a period each year for celebrating
the contributions to the United States of the Jewish community's history, heritage, and culture.
Since 2006, the month of May has been Presidentially declared to be Jewish American Heritage
Month, pursuant to bipartisan resolution for Congress; and
WHEREAS, Jewish immigrants to America, ever since their first arrival to our shores in the 16th century, have
played a central role in the growth, freedom, prosperity, and strength of the United States of
America; and
WHEREAS, Temple Beth EI, established in 1875, and its members of the Jewish Faith, endorse the tradition
of May as Jewish American Heritage Month in Dubuque; and
WHEREAS, the Jewish community has made significant contributions in shaping the cultural, economic,
educational, government, science, technology, and other fields in the Dubuque community; and
WHEREAS, by bringing Jewish American Heritage Month to Dubuque, we offer hope and optimism through
the celebration of the vibrant heritage of the Jewish Americans who have enriched our lives. The
contemporary history of the Jewish people and enduring values of the Jewish faith were vital
sources of inspiration for the founding of the United States, the Civil Rights movement, America's
global leadership in the cause of freedom, and commitment to social justice; and
WHEREAS, local recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month matters now more than ever. Since the
October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, Jews are facing the worst global antisemitism since the
Holocaust, with many of our US cities experiencing an increase in antisemitic incidents. The
resurgence of this ancient hatred is a threat not only to Jewish people but to all of us; and
WHEREAS, we must continue the dialogue, denouncing hate speech and actions directed against anyone,
and urge mutual respect and discourse, standing against all forms of hate and bigotry. We remain
united in our commitment to dignity, compassion, and justice for all residents of Dubuque.
NOW THEREFORE, I, RIC W. JONES, MAYOR PRO TEM OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH
OF MAY 2024 AS
"Jewish American Heritage Month"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND URGE RESIDENTS TO CELEBRATE AND HONOR THIS
OCCASION.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and
caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to be affixed
this 20th day of May 2024.
Ric W. Jones, Mayor Pro Tem
