ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Proclamation Supporting Documentation '1"II II cl rY Or DU- E Masterpiece on the Mississippi PITDIMCLAMATION WHEREAS, the residents of City of Dubuque and the Greater Dubuque region recognize the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge; and WHEREAS, the Refuge was created by an act of Congress 100 years ago on June 7, 1924, to systematically evaluate, manage, and protect the 261 mile, 240,000-acre river corridor, from Wabasha, Minnesota, to Princeton, Iowa, including 72 cities and towns; and WHEREAS, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, nonprofit partners, and others work to conserve, protect, and enhance habitat and plant life for use as a breeding ground for migratory birds, fish, and other wildlife, including 42 freshwater mussel species and 840 plants as well as 300 nesting pairs of America's symbol, the bald eagle; and WHEREAS, the Refuge offers recreational opportunities to the public including hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, boating, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife viewing and photography, as well as environmental, historical, and cultural education and welcomes 3.7 million visitors annually; and; WHEREAS, the City of Dubuque encourages residents and the people of Iowa to gather locally throughout the year for events to celebrate the 100th anniversary. NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 7th OF JUNE 2024 AS: "UPPER MISSISSISSIPPI RIVER WILDLIFE AND FISH REFUGE DAY" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
