1915 September Council Proceedingsa 1 3 NOTICE. TO CONTRACTORS. Sealed proposals will be received at the City Recorder's office, City Hall, by the City Recorder until 8:00 p. m. Thursday, Sept. 2nd, 1915, for the construction of a retaining will on the north side of Leibnitz Street from the end of the present wall ex- tending westerly and abutting lots in Klingenberg s 4th Subdivision, in ac- cordance with the plans and specifi- cations prepared by th3 City Engineer and now on file in the office of the City Recorder. It is estimated by the City Engineer that said improvement will require: 20 cubic yards of concrete. The work to be paid for when said work is completed and as prescribed by Chapter XXXII and amendments thereto of the Revised Ordinances of 1901 of the City of Dubuque, Iowa, work to be completed on or before the 1st day of October, 1915. Gentlemen: The undersigned your special committee designated by ordi- nance to audit the annual report of the Dubuque Bridge Co., would respect- fully report that we have performed that duty and find that the reports as submitted correspond with the books and vouchers in said Bridge Co's. of- fice. We would further report that the property of the Company is exempt from taxation by ordinance until such time as the net receipts are equal to eight per cent on $108,868.16 which would be $8709.45, and as the earnings for the year amounted to but $7968.03, we would respectfully recommend that said taxes be cancelled for the year 1914, and that the City Treasurer be instructed accordingly. Beyer until recently employed as a lieutenant in the City fire department and being connected with Engine House No. 6, on Aug. 17th last was thrown from a fire truck, receiving severe injuries which on Aug. 21st caused his death. Mr. Beyer was engaged as a fireman and received his injuries while act- ing in that capacity and, under the Workmen's Compensation Act, his de- pendents become entitled to the com- pensation as therein provided. I have, therefor, prepared a memoran- dum of settlement with Amanda B'eyer, the widow of said deceased, Which has been submitted to the In- dustrial Commissioner of the State and received his approval. The set- tlement effected, which is in strict ac- cordance with the State Law, is as follows: George Beyer at the time of his death was receiving the sum of $76.00 a month, making his average annual earnings $912.00. This sum divided by fifty -two weeks, give3 the average weekly earnings of deceased, amount- ing to $17.54 a week. The law pro- vides that in case of death a total dependent shall receive one -half of the average weekly earnings for a period of three hundred weeks, in this case being the sum of $8.77 for three hundred weeks, or a total sum of $2,631.00. Amanda Bey•.r has agreed tnat her payments shall be made to her monthly, making a sum due her each month of $35.08. Be it Ordained by the City Council of the City of Dubuque:• — Sec. 1. That Sec. 32 of an Ordi- nance entitled "An Ordinance to pro- vide for improving the streets, alleys and ppblic landings, and for the con- struction and repair of sidewalks," of the revised Ordinances of 1901, be and the same is hereby repealed, said sec- tion being as follows: "Section 32. Curbstones shall be set on all streets sixty -four feet wide at a distance of twelve feet from the line of the street, so that the street beween the curbstones shall be forty feet wide, and on all other streets the curbstone ;hall be set at 'a distance from the line of the street of one -fifth part of the "whole width of the street."
