Commissioner Anderson called the meeting of the Equity & Human Rights Commission
to order at 4:34 p.m.
Commissioners Present: Carla Anderson, Jake Kurczek, Dave Heiar, Matthew Zanger,
Theresa Sampson -Brown
Commissioners Absent: Maitha Jolet (excused), Michaela Freiburger, Enoch Sanchez
Staff Present: Ann Marie Jannette
Approval of April 2024, Meeting Minutes
Correction discussed. Anderson motioned, second by Kurczek, to approve the meeting
minutes of April 9, 2024, as corrected.
Reports
Caseload Report
One complaint logged during the month, two current active investigations, two incidents
currently in mediation, zero incidents in full hearing, four cases closed during the month, 64
cases closed FY24, and 62 total cases FY24.
Director's Report
Jannette gave an update on Aitken-Shadle stating that her return to the office is still
unknown. Jannette attended a sustainability conference hosted in Dubuque which took
place over two days. Jannette gave a presentation to Catholic Charities about belonging and
social justice. She also attended the Employee Appreciation event; she had a benefits table
about ICC training.
Chairperson's Report
Anderson reported a focus on getting families into a habitat room. They are actively
recruiting black families. She has started an anti -bullying organization that she is interested
in getting into the schools.

• Upcoming commissioner training — please respond to the most recent Doodle
calendar email request.

• Budget availability for speaker is $4,000.00. Requested speaker resume/criteria
requested to be provided. A tentative plan for using the funding at a later date
must be in place by 6/30.
• Individual commissioners will submit items to include in the Commission Goals and
Successes document. The commission will not meet separately to vote on what is
included and instead everyone's contributions will be added.
• Reschedule the June commission meeting due to a planned absence by Jannette. The
June meeting will be moved to the 25tn
• Report from subcommittee for Equity and Human Rights Commission city
ordinances.

There was no public input.
Adjournment:
Kurchzek motioned and Zanger seconded to adjourn. All in favor. The meeting ended at
6:17 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
