WHEREAS, the University of Dubuque's history of leadership, innovation, and change in service to
church and world began in autumn of 1852 when Dutch immigrant, the Reverend Adrian
Van Vliet, started tutoring two brothers for ministry, thus forming the Van Vliet School to
serve the growing population of immigrants on the American frontier; and
WHEREAS, these immigrant populations continued arriving to the area that would become known as
Dubuque, the "Key City" of Iowa, to study at the Van Vliet School. First there were two
students, then 9, then 17, and in 1912 the first women students were welcomed; and
WHEREAS, in 1920, a new charter was issued, officially renaming the institution as the University of
Dubuque, which would develop into a university with both a college and a seminary; and
WHEREAS, the university would continue to expand physically and programmatically, adding courses
in education, psychology, English, and the sciences; and
WHEREAS, in 1974, the department of aviation was formed, initially supported by two planes; and
WHEREAS, we acknowledge and celebrate the University of Dubuque's 50 years of fostering
academic and professional skills that have enabled their aviation graduates, now
numbering over 1,300, for success in all segments of the aviation industry, including
various branches of the military; and
WHEREAS, August 19th marks Orville Wright's birthday and in 1939, President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt issued a presidential proclamation designating this day as National Aviation
Day.
NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
