WHEREAS, the nation's 120,000 nonprofit arts organizations, the National Endowment for the
Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the nation's 4,500 local arts
agencies, and the arts and humanities councils of the 50 states and the six U.S.
jurisdictions and districts have regularly issued official proclamations on an annual
basis designating October as National Arts and Humanities Month; and
WHEREAS, despite significant losses due to the coronavirus pandemic, the creative industries
remain among the most vital sectors of the economy, providing innovative
opportunities for community development, creating jobs and economic activity
within their own and across sectors, and making communities attractive for tourism
attraction, business development, and workforce retention; and
WHEREAS, Dubuque's nonprofit arts and culture sector generates $70.4 million in economic
activity annually, supporting 1,527 local jobs, and generating $6.7 million in local
and state government revenue; and
WHEREAS, our community prioritizes investment in grant support, public art programming, and
ongoing implementation of Dubuque's Arts and Culture Master Plan; and
WHEREAS, the arts and humanities embody so much of the accumulated wisdom, intellect,
and imagination of humankind; and
WHEREAS, the arts and humanities play a unique role in creating connection and telling the
stories of our families, communities, and country; and
WHEREAS, local arts and humanities programs are dedicated to inclusive access, diverse
representation, and equitable empowerment of creatives, culture bearers, and
humanities scholars towards a more connected, just, and inclusive Dubuque.
NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA,
ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024 AS:
"ARTS AND HUMANITIES MONTH"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to
be affixed this 7th day of October 2024.
