WHEREAS, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America is
celebrating a fantastic milestone: the 125t" birthday of the most excellent
service organization in the world; and
WHEREAS, the VFW believes in protecting and fighting for those brave enough to fight
for us, the residents of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the VFW came into existence to address the issues plaguing our country's
returning veterans from the Spanish-American War on the evening of the
29t" of September, 1899; and
WHEREAS the Dubuque Veterans of Foreign Wars Leo A. Schwind — Gerald
F. Winter Post 508 was established on October 2nd, 1920, becoming Iowa's
first and oldest existing VFW Post; and
WHEREAS the founders were willing to make a difference by making things right for
those who deserved it most; and
WHEREAS the VFW has held to its founding principles and remained unwavering in its
advocacy efforts for veterans, service members, and their families for 125
years.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF
DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY RECOGNIZE THE VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS ON ITS
125TH BIRTHDAY FOR THE INVALUABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF
GENERATION OF VETERANS, SERVICE MEMBERS, AND THEIR FAMILIES.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have
hereunto set my hand and caused the
Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to be
affixed this 21 st day of October 2024.
