City Council ITEM TITLE: Human Trafficking and Modern -Day Slavery Prevention Month (Januury 2025) SUMMARY: On behalf of the Tri-State Coalition Against Human Trafficking and Modern -Day Slavery. Proclamation Page 10 of 366 THE 17 N v oUB E Alasterpiece on the Mississippi WHEREAS, by Presidential proclamation each January has been designated National Human Trafficking and Modern -Day Slavery Prevention month. In addition, January 11th has been designated National Human Trafficking Awareness Day; and WHEREAS, the issues of sex trafficking and labor trafficking area violation of human rights. The hope of this Proclamation is to raise awareness of this topic; and WHEREAS, the City of Dubuque wishes to acknowledge the following organization for its tenth anniversary to raise awareness about human trafficking: Tri-State Coalition Against Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery; and WHEREAS, the United Nations Global Plan of Action has three pillars upon which it stands: "protect, prevent, prosecute". We invite all residents of Dubuque to educate themselves on this issue and to support these three pillars to help eradicate the problem; and WHEREAS, we invite parents, middle and high school students, teachers and all residents to a free viewing of "Maya" on Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025 at 5:30 pm in the Dubuque Phoenix Theater; and WHEREAS, human trafficking is a national, state, and local issue. We encourage all businesses to participate in the Iowa Businesses Against Trafficking (I -BAT) initiative as well as involvement in the Coalition's Lunch and Learn Program to develop advocacy protocols for survivors. NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF JANUARY 2025 AS "HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND MODERN-DAY SLAVERY PREVENTION MONTH" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
