Why are you I have a deep respect for the work of civil servants, especially those
interested in serving in police, fire, and dispatch. Beyond their life-saving
applying for this responsibilities, these departments are essential to building trust,
Board or stability, and a sense of safety in our community —qualities that feel
Commission? more important than ever in today's divided climate.
My interest in this commission also comes from personal experience.
In 2019, 1 participated in Dubuque's Citizen Police Academy and a
police ride -along, which gave me valuable insight into the
department's operations, procedures, and challenges. These
experiences deepened my appreciation for the complexities of civil
service roles and the importance of fair, transparent processes.
Professionally, my background in public relations has equipped me to
gather facts, listen to different perspectives, and apply them fairly
within established rules and regulations. Combined with my
education and life experience, I strive to be an ethical decision -
maker and to lead by example.
Most of all, helping others and contributing to my community are
values close to my heart. Serving on the Civil Service Commission
would allow me to support the people who serve Dubuque every day
and to play a small but meaningful role in strengthening the fabric of
our city.

Board or
Commission?
On a personal level, I have sought out opportunities to gain a deeper
understanding of public safety roles in Dubuque. I participated in the
Citizen Police Academy in 2019 and completed a police ride -along.
Both of which provided me with firsthand insight into the daily
responsibilities, procedures, and challenges faced by our civil service
departments. I plan to participate in the next Citizens Police
Academy to gain a more current perspective. If selected to serve on
the Commission, I would continue to participate in regular ride-
alongs to remain connected to the challenges our civil service
workers face and the expectations placed upon them. If there are
similar opportunities with the fire department and dispatch, I would
be glad to participate as well.
Volunteerism and community leadership are also central to who I am.
I have volunteered at the Salvation Army food pantry, which gave me
a greater perspective on the needs of lower -income and underserved
residents. In addition, I lead the Dubuque Nature Everywhere team
through its research and foundation -building stages, collaborating
with the youngest Dubuque residents, along with their parents,
educators, caregivers, and guardians, to expand access to nature for
0-6-year-olds. Both roles have strengthened my ability to listen with

empathy, build consensus, and create practical solutions.
Finally, my personal strengths align closely with the qualities needed
for this Commission. My CliftonStrengths top results —harmony,
achiever, consistency, learner, and empathy —reflect both my
commitment to fairness and my drive to work hard on behalf of the
community. These strengths, combined with my education,
professional experience, and service, prepare me to thoughtfully and
ethically support the mission of the Civil Service Commission.

In the private sector, my career involves assisting employers in
managing their employee benefits program and advising them on
how they spend millions of budgeted dollars annually. This requires
collaboration to understand their fiscal and cultural goals, high-level
strategical thinking and problem solving, and effective
communication whether I'm speaking to C-suite, HR, or their
workforce. In my personal life, I enjoy restoring homes for a new
homeowner which requires balancing the needs of the property,
market expectations, and project management from start to finish.
