WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for telling a more complete story of our community,
fostering local pride, revitalizing neighborhoods, managing growth, creating sustainable
communities, and enhancing livability; and
WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by
dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has
shaped us as a people; and
WHEREAS, the City honors preservation efforts annually through the Historic Preservation
Commission's Awards, in partnership with the Dubuque County Historic Preservation
Awards and Dubuque Main Street, taking place on May 19t" at the Carnegie-Stout Public
Library at 6 pm; and
WHEREAS, the nation marks 250 years of American independence, preservation efforts in 2026 are
heavily focused on celebrating 250 years of American freedom, history, and heritage; and
WHEREAS, May is national Preservation Month, and is sponsored locally by the City of Dubuque
Historic Preservation Commission, as it celebrates the theme "Harnessing the Power of
Place" to emphasize how protecting historic spaces meets community needs and is an
opportunity for the community to celebrate the people preserving our history that is
significant to our community's past and future.
NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM
THE MONTH OF MAY 2026 AS
"PRESERVATION MONTH"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, CALLING UPON DUBUQUERS TO JOIN OTHERS ACROSS THE UNITED
STATES IN RECOGNIZING AND PARTICIPATING IN THIS SPECIAL OBSERVANCE.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to be
affixed this 4t" day of May, 2026.
