WHEREAS, celebration of Indigenous Heritage Day is an opportunity to honor Indigenous peoples'
customs, food, dance, stories, and music, with a special focus on those connected to
lowa; and
WHEREAS, celebration of Indigenous Heritage Day will be held at the Multicultural Family Center on
Saturday, May 16, 2026; and
WHEREAS, this celebration recognizes the significant contributions of the Meskwaki Tribe to the
history, culture, and heritage of both the United States and the State of lowa; and
WHEREAS, this celebration will also recognize Indigenous nations and tribes with deep connections
to this region, including the Meskwaki Nation and the earlier mound builders of the loway
and Ho-Chunk people; and
WHEREAS, this event will promote education and awareness within the community about how
Indigenous peoples have historically and sustainably used the land, water, and natural
resources in our region.
NOW THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND RESIDENTS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE 16T" OF MAY 2026 AS
"Celebration of Indigenous Heritage Day"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN ITS
OBSERVANCE AND TO HONOR THE RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to
be affixed this 4t" day of May 2026.
