WHEREAS National Poppy Day in the United States was Friday, 22 May 2026, held annually on the
Friday before Memorial Day to honor fallen military personnel and support living veterans.
Americans wore red poppies to symbolize sacrifice, with funds raised supporting veterans
and their families, and
WHEREAS The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice, worn to honor those who
served and died for the country in all wars, and
WHEREAS Following World War I, poppies flourished in the battle-scarred soil of Europe, inspiring
the poem "In Flanders Fields" and establishing it as a symbol of bloodshed and
remembrance, and
WHEREAS Appreciation for Veterans from our community is welcome and deserved, and should be
shown to them every day of the year, and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRAD M. CAVANAGH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM
THAT EVERY FRIDAY BEFORE MEMORIAL DAY, EFFECTIVE WITH MAY 22, 2026, IS DECLARED
NATIONAL POPPY DAY IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE TO HONOR FALLEN VETERANS, AND
ENCOURAGE RESIDENTS TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT BY WEARING A POPPY ON THIS DAY,
AND THE ENTIRE MONTH OF MAY, EACH YEAR.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to
be affixed this 1 St day of June 2026.
