Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1930-31, Art Deco style, the style was then described as “modern, conservative style…monumental in its effect, but at the same time will impress one with its domesticity.” The “exterior effect will be enhanced by the use of textured buff brick, with limestone trim at doors, windows and coping. Additional character will be gained by the use of ornamental iron balconies and a marquee.” Designer/Builder: Anton Zwack, builder, Fisher and Kennison, local architects. Physical Description: two-story brick veneered tile square plan (65x56) with north and west raised pavilions, second story penthouse and east end garage/porte cochere. Stone entry and window surrounds, floor-length windows with metal fence balcony effects, vertical fluting of corners, suspended canopy entry. The plan allowed for main floor main chapel, auxiliary chapels, second story apartments with a separate west entrance and stairwell. Alterations: penthouse might be an addition with different brickwork, window treatments. No permit th data, see interior remodeling of 80 W 15 1980, $193,738? Landscaping/Setting: level corner site, fronts west 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; this is the only building in the city planned and built for use as a mortuary, it was built by former county coroner, George F. Strueber. Original Owner/Builder: Strueber Funeral Home, George F. Strueber, entered into the funeral business th in October 1919, being located at 18 and Central. The new funeral home opened in late July 1931 (Telegraph-Herald, July 23, 1931). Building History: Replaced pre-1866 frame Sheppley rowhouse string. Currently owned by the Visiting Nurse Association (Walking Tour of Jackson Park). Construction began in the second half of 1930 and completion was scheduled for May 1, 1931 (Telegraph-Herald and Times-Journal, October 23, 1930). 9.
