REQUEST TO
USE MURPHY
PARK FOR
LITTLE
DUBLIN'S IRISH
FEST;
VOTE:
DISCUSS PEPSI
REQUEST FOR
EXCLUSIVE
SOFT DRINK
RIGHTS AT
BUNKER HILL:
John Finn and Jeff Cremer from The Busted Lift Irish Pub were present to
request the use of Murphy Park on October 13th for Little Dublin's Irish Fest.
The event is a fundraiser - last year $6,000 went to American Cancer Society;
this year's proceeds will go to Hillcrest Family Services. Some of the major
points include: place a 30' x 100' tent in the park for live music from 11:00 a.m.
to 10:00 p.m.; a separate tent for vendors; beer wagon under the main tent;
portable rest rooms would be brought in; they would rent all three pavilions at
regular price ($168). Mr. Finn said they would need street parking in addition
to the spaces inside the park.
Commissioner Hoffmann was concerned about the neighbors - we don't want
to ruin the department's relationship with the neighbors. Commissioner
Harjehausen asked how many people were at the festival at one time last year,
and Mr. Finn estimated 800 at any one time. The largest crowd seemed to be
in the middle of the day when the Claddagh Irish Dancers were performing.
Manager Spence suggested that commission approve the request, as tong as
all arrangements and details were worked out to the satisfaction of staff.
It was moved by Daykin, seconded by Du,q,qan, to approve the request of John
Finn to hold the Little Dublin Irish Fest in Murphy Park on October 13, 2001, as
Ion,q as all arrangements meet with the approval of staff. The motion passed
unanimously.
Pepsi Cola contacted Mr. Spence requesting an exclusive soft drink contract at
Bunker Hill Golf Course. Mr. Spence explained he is not looking for the
commission to take any action, but wants to see if the commission feels this is
a good idea. If the commission feels it's a good idea, Spence would need to
talk to the City Manager and then go to three vendors and ask for proposals.
Comments from commissioners include: if it makes more money for the City,
go for it; good idea to look into it and if the proposals are good, pick the best
one; should set a five-year maximum or some time limit; would you do the
same thing if a beer vendor requested exclusive rights?
CHANGE
GOLF POLICY
FOR FALL
TVVILIGHT
RATE; VOTE:
The present golf policy allows for the twilight rate to be in effect all day Monday
through Thursday, and after noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning
the Tuesday following Labor Day. Staff is recommending that Friday be added
to the days the rate is in effect all day.
Commissioner Harjehausen would like to see the twilight rate be moved up to
4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday all year (currently Monday through Friday at
4:00; Saturday and Sunday at 6:00). He asked if staff could check into it for
next year and get a dollar figure if possible, as far as how it would effect
revenue.
It was moved bv Du.q.qan, seconded bv Hadehausen, to approve making the
fall twilight rate in effect Monday through Friday, all day, and beginning at noon
Saturday and Sunday, startinq the Tuesday after Labor Day. The motion
passed unanimously.
AUTHORIZE
FALL
SPECIAL
AT BUNKER
HILL; VOTE:
Commissioner Schrobilgen asked if we were going to offer any special fall
deals at Bunker Hill which would include green fees, cart and a burger or other
food item. He feels we need to market Bunker Hill to draw people here; need
to stay in line with competition. Since any fall special should go in effect before
the next commission meeting, Manager Spence asked for approval to check
out other courses and compare fall deals, and offer a similar deal at Bunker
Hill.
It was moved by Schrobilqen, seconded bv Blocklinger, to authorize staff to
check fall deals at other golf courses and offer a similar deal at Bunker Hill.
The motion passed unanimously.
PARK
DIVISION
REPORT:
RECREATION
DIVISION
REPORT:
ADJOURN;
VOTE:
Park Division Manager John Hail updated commissioners: everyone is out
watering instead of mowing, because of the heat; · renovation is in progress at
Flat Iron Park; · we will be renovating playground equipment at Flora, Murphy
and Cleveland parks
In the absence of Division Manager Pat Prevenas, Mr. Spence informed
commissioners: Sutton Pool closed for the season on Sunday, August 19th --
good swim attendance; · golf rounds are down - too hot; · business in the
snack bar is good; cart rental good; surprised that liquor sales are not higher --
only about $4,000 in liquor sales since beginning of season; maybe we can try
promoting a certain drink on a certain day
It was moved by Harjehausen, seconded by Schrobilgen, that the meeting be
adjourned at 5:10 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
