Proclamation - Alzheimer'sWHEREAS, Alzheimet'sDiseaseisaprogressive, degenerativediseaseofthebrain, andthe most common form of dementia; and WHEREAS, approximately 4 million American's have Alzheimer's disease, 19 million Americans say they have a family member with Alzheimer's disease and 37 million know someone with the disease; and WHEREAS, 14 million Americans will have Alzheimer's disease by the middle of the next century unless a cure or prevention is found; and WHEREAS, U.S. society spends at least $100 billion a year on Alzheimer's disease, since neither Medicare nor private health insurance covers the type of long-term care most patients need. The greatest cost of Alzheimer's disease is borne by families, many of whom must provide care for loved ones in a most difficult situation; and WH ER EA S, the Dubuque Branch Office of the Alzheimer's Association is the primary source of information and support for families facing the realities of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease in the Dubuque area, including Family Conferencing and Planning, Safe Return, Helpline, Support Groups and Family Education Programs; and WHEREAS, the Annual Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk is the only national fundraising event to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer's disease; and WHEREAS, the AIzheimer's Association Memory Walk serves as a single unifying event that brings Alzheimer's patients, family members and the community together in a show of true love, remembrance and support in hopes of hastening the elimination of AIzheimer's disease. NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MA YOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 15, 200f AS: "ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION MEMORY WALK AWARENESS DA Y" IN DUBUQUE, AND URGE OUR CITIZENS TO ENHANCE THEIR AWARENESS AND GIVE SUPPORT TO THOSE AFFLICTED AND THEIR CAREGIVERS.
