7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Vernacular 1.5 story gable front frame T-plan
Physical Description:
21x38 core, stone foundation, broad wood water table, original clapboard, rounded turret and porch,
bay in northwest side corner, kitchen in southwest corner, basement joists are a mix of circular sawn
and pit sawn stock, stairway is along south sidewall, trim is plain with butt joints, broad pine flooring
upstairs.
Alterations:
Faux red asphalt brick siding removed, porch lost in 1950s, house restored and repainted, yard
landscaped, breezeway built to link to new double garage, Victorian two-story dovecote or shed.
Enclosed porch in southwest corner provided a replacement basement stairway. Angled bay with
Mansard cap and ocular window, cresting is new, rounded porch addition also new.
Building Permit Card:
1999-erect 14x14x6 2 story frame addition –owner: Tom Welu-contractor:owner-$19,000.
Outbuildings:
Rear garage attached, stone foundation, monitor roof, 1910, 8x13, small cute little shed (new) looks live
a dovecote, church-like shed to south.
Landscaping Notes:
High corner terrace, drive to the west, exits to the north

T. E. Ott owns Lot 4 when sewered c.1922. Adolph Cooper owns Lot 5, same. Sewer hookups July 15,
1925, September 13, 1923.
Tom Welu buys 1989, married Cindy 1990, on Annual Dubuque Fest Historic House Tour, May 20-21,
1995.
Abstract Notes: The original King Plat was filed January 16, 1873 and E. B. Farley’s Grove Addition
dates to c.1892. Charles W. and Louisa Klein acquire Lot 5 only August 12, 1911 and secure a
mortgage from John V. Jansen for $1,200 on March 30, 1912 (but same is redeemed that same day),a
new mortgage for $1,450 is secured March 30, 1915. The house is dated to 1910 but the only earlier
sale is to Peter Kiene Jr. from Peter Mihm, September 6, 1898. Broadway is extended in 1911. Adolph
and Clotilda Cooper buy the property August 3, 1922 and they secure a $2,200 mortgage in 1926 but it

is quickly cancelled. The property passes to the Hohman family in 1926, Acker, 1927-33, Holz 1933-
51, and to Edward Wiezorek March 15, 1951. He obtains a mortgage for $5,950 but no permits are
linked to this cottage. Wiezoreck died February 4, 1885 and the present owner buys June 12, 1889.
