Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Unusual row house type two-story parapet front brick hip roof porch and side wing. Physical Description: 38x17 core, entrance in front left hand corner, 5x15 porch, very unusual two-tone brickwork, gray and red, colors reverse between floor, water tables of four layers of gray brick, raised concrete foundation, two chimneys stepped out on east side, classical fluted porch columns, flat lintel lines indicate later building date. Alterations: Metal railings on porch, window replacements. Outbuildings: Rusticated concrete block hip roof garage, 1930, 20x16 Landscaping Notes: Driveway to the east, level lot, fronts southwest. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Historical Notes: Pete Mettel (Fulton Street) dies at home of son John, 1901-Mettel was then city's oldest resident, 99 years and six months, born in 1802, came to Dubuque 1863 (Telegraph-Herald, July 23, 1901). The Sanborn Map clearly post-dates house after 1909, yet house is listed as occupied by two families on either side of 1909? City Directory Notes: (65 Hart) First listing 1908, John B. and Edna Hirtz, cashier, Dubuque Star Brewing Co. (65) John P. Mettel (65),1909-11 Arch Pettigrew (63), Rud. Tschude (65), 1918 Edw. Viertel, 1921 Edward McAndrews, 1955, family has owned 32 years. Historical Image Notes: The 1909 Sanborn Map shows the foundation only of this house. The 1891 map showed no platted lot at this location. The 1909/36 map shows a two-story house, with full width front porch, a concrete block garage (rear right) and the house as 73 Hart.
