Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Contemporary plan, catslide like roof, altered early two-story frame L-plan. An unrecognizable re- building of what is presumably a very early house. Physical Description: 40x38 core Alterations: Permastone foundation Building Permit Card: 1942-reside-owner: Fred Hufthill-$90 1959-erect concrete block garage-owner: Arthur Oberbroeckling-$1 ,000 1974-reside-contractor: Burke Alumatic-$2450 Outbuildings: Four stall concrete block garage, 1959, 24x54, south end door, gambrel shed Landscaping Notes: Deep setback, concrete block retaining wall to west, open lot to the west, drive to west 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Historical Notes: This house is associated with the brewery to the immediate north, deep setback indicates that this was a very early residence in this area. It was apparently built by John Schaffner as a home, in the Greek Revival style (see photo below). This was not confirmed by city directories given the absolute loss of historical integrity in the present building. lown BREWERY J'CHMIOT BHOoS & Co. 1 c","c'y too,v"u "'" IMr. /(IGIIT h'R/r;H/'IJN(~NuQ.oQc -lImrrf'rr",,.,. rl/~< awl. Name of Property 121 West 23rd Street Address Dubuque County Dubuque City ... "" John Schaffner Residence, Tivoli or Centennial Gardens, view northwest (Telegraph-Herald, May 27, 1934) John Schaffner established the Tivoli Gardens in conjunction with the Tschirgi & Schmid Brewery, in the early or mid-1850s. Richard Cox operated the gardens 1860-63, followed by Joseph Zugenbuehler (1863-76) and finally John Krayer (1876-closure). Schaffner's Greek Revival style cottage survived into the 1930s and might form the core of 121 West 23rd today. The gardens were reduced in size as housing was built to the south along Hart/West 23rd Street and this cottage was obscured by a large double-decked billboard. When those were removed the house was confused with that of Lucius Hart Langworthy, who had built a house in the early 1830s in an oak grove beyond Frances Street, to the south of West 23rd Street. City Directory Notes: (75 Hart) Frank D. Scharle, contractor 1899-1918 (at 62 Hart 1898) Jas. Powell, 1921 Historical Image Notes: Clearly depicted on 1872 Bird's Eye View. The 1889 Bird's Eye View shows this house as present as an elongated two-story side gable plan. The 1884 and 1891 Sanborn maps shows a single-story square building with a wrap-around porch on the east and south exposures. There was a single story rear wing offset north, a series of other outbuildings, nine in number, lining the parcel's northwest sides and an octagonal well house. The 1909 map shows fewer outbuildings and addresses it as 75 Hart. The house was presumably associated with the Schmidt Brothers and then the Weiss beer companies. By 1909/36 the house had Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs State Historical Society of Iowa Iowa Site Inventory Form Continuation Sheet Site Number 31-05447 Related District Number Paqe 3 John Schaffner Residence (?) Name of Property 121 West 23rd Street Address Dubuque County Dubuque City only a small rear frame offset wing, fewer outbuildings including a two-story carriage house, and was associated with the Artesian Bottling Works. 9.
