Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Foursquare, three hip roof dormers, exposed purlins, shingle exterior, Craftsman style, side bay, gable roof side entry, symmetrical pedimented wing and off-set gable roof porch Physical Description: 32x28, front and rear projections, wood shingle, purlins, wood water table. Alterations: Oriole added on west side, wood shingle exterior not original. 1971-removal of original wrap-around porch, construct deck, fence and finish attic space, replace clapboard exterior with wood shingles. Building Permit Cards: 1971- alt single family frame dwelling - $14,500- owner: Wayne Norman – contractor: Heitzman Construction 1971-8’ high fence 1996 – remodel interior, erect 18x19 2 story addition, 26x14 porch - $120,000- owner Paul Peckosh- contractor: Joe Faley Outbuildings: Single car gable front garage to south Landscaping Notes: Next to street elevator, on edge of bluff, fronts south, largely hidden by tall solid fence/pergola. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Evaluation: Lessened integrity due to shingle exterior and loss of wrap-around porch. Historical Notes: Samuel W. and Marjorie Upton build this new residence at “1 Fenelon Place or Fenelon Point” 1911 (Telegraph-Herald, December 31, 1911). The original house had a much more formal double decker wrap-around porch to the east and south. Site of observation deck for Fenelon Elevator Company until 1910, purchased by Upton family, who ran a laundry. The bluff front was first owned by Andrew Harrison, then Julius Graves, next the Fenelon Elevator, and finally by the Upton’s in 1910. Same own property until 1957. Joseph and Virginia Kelly own until 1967. Wayne and Kay Norman buy 1971 and remodel. Paul G. and Nancy Peckous buy 1900 and completely remodel the interior in 1996, adding two-story addition to the riverside (Old House Enthusiasts Historic House Tour, May 19-20, 2001). Historical Image Notes: th The 1909/36 Sanborn map addresses this house as 501 West 4 Street. It is shown with a south- facing wrap-around porch and a rear porch.
