Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Vernacular two-story side gable brick five-plex, with walkout basement on northeast corner Physical Description: 37x65 core, stuccoed foundation, brick voussoir arches, wood sills Alterations: Dreadful tuckpointing work, door on northwest front reduced to window, consisted of three side hall/center hall units, east unit central door bricked in and stone sill removed, central unit door intact, west unit side hall (right hand entry) reduced to window, sill left in place, all three separate porches removed, metal canopy in center, west end doors and two-story balcony with stairs added, foundation stuccoed. Narrative Statement of Significance: Historical Name: J. A. Rhomberg Tenement Block Historical Notes: Purported to have served as Civil War hospital but the building post-dates the war. Apparently is the three-tenement block, two stories with basement, built by J. A. Rhomberg on 5th Street for $10,000 in 1869 (Herald, December 16, 1869). City Directory Notes: (202, 212, and 218 West 5th) Floyd Wagner, 1921 Historical Image Notes: The 1909 Sanborn map shows the block as consisting of three dwellings, 202, 212, and 218 West 5th. A row of four sheds lines the alley to the south. The 1909/36 Sanborn map shows the same.
