MINUTES OF
October 8, 2001
Thom Determan called the meeting of the Dubuque Human Rights Commission to order
at 4:17 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2001 in Conference Room 2 at the City Hall Annex.

Approval of Minutes:
Kathy Stevens moved to approve the minutes of the September 10 and 17, 2001 Human
Rights Commission meetings. Ruby seconded. Headng no discussion, the minutes
were unanimously approved.
Chairperson's Report:
On October 25th there will be a headng at Keystone that will be held in conjunction with
the ICRC, NAACP, and the Iowa Commission on the Status of African Americans
concerning K-12 education for African Amedcan students. The public input segment will
begin at 6:00 p.m.
Burton Everest, from the Wartburg Seminary, contacted Thom regarding conducting a
forum in conjunction with the colleges, seminaries, DACU, hospitals, and schools, about
teaching people about Islam. Mr. Everest asked if the Commission could provide
leadership for this initiative. Commissioners requested additional information pdor to
committing. Marty and Thom will work on this initiative.

Discuss Implementation Plans for 2001-2002 Goals
Each Commissioner identified goals they would be interested in working on dudng the
2001-2002 year.
Kathy S. moved to adopt the initiatives for the 2001-2002 year. Ruby seconded. All in
favor.
New Business
Raydora moved to change the regular November Human Rights Commission meeting
from November 12 to November 5, 2001. Kathy B. seconded. All in favor.
Marty provided timelines on the Taylor and Pards cases for Commissioner review. He
would like to see a policy set so that timelines are consistent in all cases that proceed to
a public headng. Marty asked to further discuss this after Commissioners review the
timelines.
Ruby moved and Kathy S. seconded to adjoum the meeting. All in favor. The meeting
adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
