7. Narrative Description:
Style/Year: Two-Story, Side-Gable Rowhouse built in c.1890. The building has been clad with
corrugated metal. Asbestos slate siding and a gable window is exposed on the west façade of the
building. Over head door openings have been cut into the west and east facades of the building.

A 20'W x 48'L (960 sq ft) attached shed-roof, metal, canopy connects 507 E. 15th Street to 505 E. 15th
Street.
Landscaping Notes:
The subject property is a level lot that has frontage on E. 15th Street. The property is border by 15th
Street to the south, an alley to the east, 505 E. 15th Street to the north and 501 E. 15th Street to the
west. There is public walk along 15th Street at this location.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This property and the surrounding neighborhood were evaluated as part of an In-depth Architectural
and Historic Survey conducted by Jim Jacobsen of History Pays! in 2003. The property at that time
was not identified as National Register Eligible. Although 11 years have passed since the in-depth
survey, the property is still not National Register Eligible. The structure has been completely altered.
The entire exterior of the building has been clad with corrugated metal. Overhead door openings have
been cut into the east and west façades. The property retains little architectural integrity.

Historical Notes: This building was constructed as a three unit rowhouse. In 1962, this building
including 501 E. 5th Street were acquired by Blum Companies and converted to warehouse spaces.
Blum Companies obtained the former Iowa Coffin Company site at the corner of 15th & Elms Street.
They originally manufactured cattle crossings, clothesline standards, tanks, culverts, fabricated steel
and flag poles (Encyclopedia Dubuque). Currently, the company is primarily a scrap iron business.

Historical Image Notes:
The 1872 Birdseye View of the City of Dubuque Iowa prepared by Augustus Koch does not show a
building constructed at this time. The 1889 Perspective Map of the City of Dubuque, IA prepared by H.
Welige shows a two-story, front-gable and wing building in place.
The 1891, 1909, 1936 and 1950 Sanborn Maps shows the property as a two-story, frame, rowhouse
with a two-story open rear porch. The 1964 Sanborn Map notes the building being used as a pipe
warehouse. The 1970 Sanbom Map notes that the building is clad with metal and being used for steel
storage.
