7. Narrative Description:
This is a well preserved example of the two story brick side gable double house, of German
vernacular design origin. The nearly square core plan (32x30) has a single story gabled rear wing
(32x14). There is a raised stone foundation with stone lintels on the front basement windows and semi-
elliptical brick arches on the side ones. Stone lintels are semi-elliptical with square springstones at
each end but side windows employ brick arches. A formal watertable underscores only the facade.
The porch, while not original, is of the same scale as the original. Entrances are centered on the plan
and have transoms. All façade windows are of equal length but side windows vary by floor in length.
Chimneys are in-wall. There is a two-party garage on the property (1930). Two later additions further
elongate the house plan. The original windows had curved upper sash but these have been replaced.
Each halve is in separate ownership.
This property and 2349-51 Washington, immediately north, are of identical type and dimension
and likely had the same builder/designer. Conscious differentiation of window arrangement and
treatments distinguish the two houses however. The sidewall fenestration on this plan is largely
relegated to the back of the south sidewall, unlike next door, where it is evenly distributed. This house
had a front porch, while its neighbor did not.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This is a splendid and well preserved early example of a two story side gable double house built
in brick. It is indentical in basic form to 2349-51 next door. A contributing property within a district, and
of historical interest due to its age and type, nothing recommends it as an individually historically
significant property under Criterion C architecture. Further research would pinpoint its date, builder and
• original owner.
This property appears on the 1891, 1909/36 Sanborn Maps. The area was not mapped for the
1884 version.
