7. Narrative Description:
This is a two-story gable front vernacular painted brick residence. The house fronts northwest onto
East 22nd and is on the corner of that street and Kniest Street to the immediate west. The building is
set close to the sidewalk.
The plan three bays in width with a Federal-style right-hand corner entrance. The building was built as
or converted to a combined commercial/residential use and the lower level front and northernmost west
sidewall bays have enlarged windows that have been reduced in size with the paneling over of
transoms. The walls are symmetrically fenestrated. One feature of interest is the presence of two
brick chimneys, one at the south end of the roof ridge, the other in the second bay south from the
northwest corner. The in-wall flue necessarily leaves a blank wall so windows flank it. The stone
foundation is slightly raised and is visible. There is no porch. Windows have cast triangular hoods and
there are straight sills, likely also of cast stone.
The rectangular plan measures 24 feet (width) by 34 feet with a 12 feet by 14 feet single-story rear
wing set in the southwest corner. A garage, if extant, measures 16 feet by 24 feet and is indicated in
the old assessor records. There is a finished attic.

8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This is a substantial and early residence. Given its brick construction it is well preserved and continues
to represent its original design and appearance. Added historical interest is derived from its
commercial use. There is a possibility that this house could be included in the Washington and East
22"d streets district, that is immediately west.
