7. Narrative Description:
This is a two-story frame side gable duplex. It's plan is of some interest due to the narrow dimension
of the original core and the early use of three-sided flat-roofed bay windows (present by 1891). The
windows throughout the house are unusually narrow. The facade employs the expected paired and
centered single-door entrances with rectangular transom lights. The bay windows flank the entrances
and contain three windows each. The porch is is a simple flat-roofed canopy with replacement square
support posts and the porch base is of wood.
North sidewall fenestration is limited to just one window per floor at the east end. The rectangular
house core measures 36 feet in width and just 24 feet in depth. The bay windows measure seven feet
by three feet, the porch nine feet by four feet. A single-story rear wing, centered on the main plan,
measures 24 feet in width and 14 feet in depth and inset corner porches measure 14 feet in length and
5.6 feet in width.
The early assessor records noted the presence of a 12 feet by 32.6 feet garage and a 20 feet by 24
feet garage.

8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
The Assessor dates this building to +1- 1880. The house was not present as of 1891. The
1889 Perspective Map of the City of Dubuque shows no houses on this part of Kniest, implying rapid
building up between 1889 and 1891. The historic house number was 185-187 Kniest.
The house is also not present as of 1909. It first appears in city directories as #180 Kniest (Paul Ranft)
and Ranft occupies it through 1911. Chas. Kress lived there in 1915.
