Narrative Description: 2120 Kniest, Barbara Atkinson Family Trust, owner. This is a two-story hip roof brick residence with an offset three-sided full-height bay front wing. There is a rear gallery porch and a recessed front corner porch entrance. The raised stone foundation exposes three courses of ashlar stone above grade. There are ten rooms (four bedrooms). The fagade windows have plain stone lintels and sills, the former being twice the thickness of the former. Semi-segmental brick window arches are formed using two courses of rowlock bricks are found on the other frontages. There is a stone foundation. There is a 14x28 frame carriage house and a 12 feet by 21 feet open carport (plastich sheeting sidewalls at present). The rectangular core measures 22 feet by 49 feet (1,131 square feet per floor level). The front wing is 15 feet wide and 3.6 feet deep. The front porch (with open balcony) is seven feet wide by four feet in depth. The rear porch is 21 feet wide and six feet in depth. Narrative Statement of Significance: The Assessor dates this building to +/- 1880. The house was not present as of 1891. The 1889 Perspective Map of the City of Dubuque shows no houses on this part of Kniest, implying rapid building up between 1889 and 1891. The house is also not present as of 1909. It first appears in city directories as #180 Kniest (Paul Ranft) and Ranft occupies it through 1911. Chas. Kress lived there in 1915.
