7. Narrative Description:
This is a broad side-gable two-story brick duplex residence with paired central entrances with
transoms. A hip roof metal canopy (12x4) covers the entrances. The facade windows are capped with
rounded stone lintels while all other openings have semi-circular rowlock arches. There are two end
chimneys. Side fenestration on the north sidewall is vertically aligned but is full only on the east half of
the main core. The plan measures 37x28 (1,036 square feet per level) and there is a full-width single-
story rear brick addition (37x14) and centered rear porch (14x4.6). The foundation is of stone.
Old Assessor measurements differ. Rectangular front two-story core measures 34 feet in width
by 28 feet in depth. Gable roof single-story rear section measures 34 feet wide by 14 feet in depth. A
centered rear porch measures 14 feet in width by 4.6 feet in depth. There is a finished attic. An 11
feet by 22 feet shed is crossed off the form. The older form notes the contract purchase by Love from
the Eberhardt family.

8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
The Assessor dates this building to +1- 1880 but the house is not present as of 1891. The 1889
Perspective Map of the City of Dubuque shows no houses on this part of Kniest, implying rapid building
up between 1889 and 1891. The 1891 Sanborn Map confirms that the established housing breaks off
north of 2110-12 Kniest. The house is present as of 1909.
Occupational data indicates that at least in its later years, this was a rental property. The
property abstract covers both halves of the house, so ownership was apparently never divided. Owner
notes are appended on the 2114 Kniest table, but apply to the entire house. **Need to double check
as to why abstract notes begin only in 1936.
