7. Narrative Description:
This lot is vacant as of 1891. This house is present by 1909. This is a fairly uncommon two-story side
gable single-family residence with a rectangular footprint. There is a two-story rear wing, also
uncommon. A brick chimney is on the ridgeline but set well inside of the north sidewall. A second
taller brick chimney is located on the north roof plane of the rear wing, also placed away from the
perimeter wall. The rearmost wing is a single-story gabel roof addition (by 1934). The shed roof
porch, while present historically, was not present as of the 1970s and is of recent vintage as indicated
by its form and its simple wood posts. The fenestration is symmetrical and full on the facade and the
entrance is at the left-hand front corner. There is a three-sided south bay. The lower facade has been
clad in ornamental stone. There are two garages, the most recent of which, has a connective link to
the house to the south, and the other, which is on Elm Street to the back of the property. The new
garage occupies the acquired portion of Lot 103, Sanborn Subdivision.
The core plan measures 20 feet in width, 26 feet deep. The rear addition with side porch (two
sections, ther rearmost is full-height to the addition, seven feet long, five feet wide, the original, to the
east is nine feet long and six feet wide) measures 14 feet in width and 16 feet in depth and its north
wall aligns with that of the original plan. The rearmost wing, also aligned on the north wall plane, is 15
feet long and eight feet wide. A near-full width front porch has been lost and there is a metal awning
over the left-hand side front entry. The south bay is gone, but as of the 1970s measured seven feet in
length and two-and-a-half feet in width. The early Assessor noted an eight feet by 12 feet shed (this
appears on fire insurance maps along the north property line.

The property abstract was unclear regarding the ownership history of the 2-3-105 parcel. Peter Scharft
bought it from the Dub. Bldg. & Loan Association on May 28, 1881 and Scharft also got a deed from
_Assmon on March 20, 1876. Albert Van Haltem paid $600 for the parcel on April 17, 1882 and
sold it to Andreas Bitter on March 20, 1890 for$450. Henry Bitter bought it on August 17, 1901. This
parcel is under the new garage and was likely acquired c.1978.
