7. Narrative Description:
This simple gable front cottage has been remodeled almost beyond recognition with the addition of a
flat-roofed second story addition. The saving grace is that the original gable front was retained for
whatever reason. There are few cottages of this form in the city, but this one no longer retains the
necessary integrity to represent the sub-type. The 1891 Sanborn shows a single-story frame store,
advanced to the curb, and it is possible that this was remodeled as a cottage by 1909. The 1909 map
shows a this cottage, with a single-story rear addition. The cottage core measures 16 feet wide and 40
feet in length. The rear wing has an enclosed side porch on the south side and measures six feet in
length and 12 feet in width (the porch is four feet in width). A rear enclosed porch (not present through
1964) measures 16 feet in width by ten feet in depth. A metal awning substitutes for a lost front porch
(14 feet long and four feet wide).

8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
It is possible that this cottage is a make-over of a pre-existing single-story frame storefront that was
moved back on the lot after 1891, and which then assumed this its then final form by 1909. The
original address was 41 Prince Street.
